Question:
I'll be heading up to Winter (near Hayward), Wisconsin this
November for my annual whitetail hunt. Does anyone have any information
or observations regarding the health of the deer herds following the
miserable winter storms?
Answer:
Oct 24-27 should see the rut cranking up in N. Wisconsin. The oaks are
now dropping acorns, and as the grasses and other forbs die off, acorns
could become one of the most important foods for whitetail deer. So, my
guess would be to find the acorns and set up near them - the whitetail
does will be finding the nuts, the bucks will be finding the does. Just
returned from an area north and east of your proposed hunting location -
not a bumper crop of nuts this year, but a lot were still on the trees,
and at least the grouse were finding the acorns, if not the deer... yet.
