Question:
Does any one have any experience with this type of program? Will it help
improve the deer herd? I am satisfied with the new law, but I wonder if it
will help?
Answer:
The Texas whitetail is a smaller subspecies of its Virginia
cousin. Note also than animals in nothern climes tend to be
significantly larger than their souther counterparts.
Overpopulation in some parts of the state, particularly in the deer
factory known as the Edwards Plateau, also produces small deer.
However, well-managed properties in the Texas Hill Country (Edwards
Plateau) and East Texas, as well as the South Texas Brush Country
(which gets most of the trophy attention), are producing big-bodied
animals with respectable racks.
Big-bodied for a Texas deer is, IMHO, 100-130 lb field dressed weight
for a buck and 70-100 lb for a doe. (Aw, quick snickering in contempt,
you dang bluebellies!
