Question:
I will be in Georgia by the time the next hunting season rolls around,
in Forsyth County near the Lake Lanier/Buford Dam area. How's the
deer hunting in this area? Are there a lot of public areas for
hunting or is it private/rented land? I also could use some
hints/suggestions on area gun/hunting clubs. I will be moving to the
area in early March.
Answer:
The deer hunting is difficult at best with rifle, because Forsyth is
getting so crowded. If you hunt with bow, it is not too bad. Most of
the huntable land will be private.
A little farther north is the Chattahoochee National Forest where you
can hunt with a rifle. The deer density is not as great, but there
have been some pretty good sized bucks taken out of the oak forests.
The real deer hunting in Georgia is in the farmlands south of Macon.
South Georgia has the "beanfield" style hunting and the G&F department
imported some Minnesota whitetail to improve the strain about 40 years
ago. I have seen some real monsters between Vienna and Cairo.
