Question:
I just had an unbelievable opportunity offered to me. I have been invited to
hunt deer on a corporate ranch 50 miles south of Midland, TX. I have accepted
of course! What can I expect to see as far as antler size, deer numbers etc?
Will the rut be on or over? I have been told 70% to 80% Desert Mule Deer and
20% to 30% Whitetail. This is not a high fenced ranch. I have hunted several
western states and Calif. Blacktails over the past 27 years, but never Texas!
Answer:
First, don't think of our Desert Mule Deer as the huge racked, old Mexico
variety. While I'm sure they exist, as far as I'm concerned you're far more
likely to kill a whitetail with a big rack than a mule deer in Texas.
Second, the neat thing about our Texas is, although whitetails with truely
huge racks tend to be in deep south Texas or in the river bottoms of north
Texas, you're liable to find a wallhanger just about anywhere except maybe
the Edwards Plateau area where there population density precludes any huge
racks.
