Question:
I'm sitting and waiting for deer season to open here in Miss. A new law
was passed this year restricting us to only three bucks (must have at
least three points) instead of five. The doe limit was raised to five.
Three bucks and five does? Yow! In Oregon, it's one buck and one doe!
Maybe I should move to Mississippi!
Answer:
It depends on if you're accustomed to hunting small blacktailes or large mulies.
I grew up in Oregon (Eugene) and later lived in Colorado before moving to
Mississippi (I was in the Air Force). When I first heard about the bag limits
for deer I was amazed, too. Then I saw the size of the whitetails down there.
Your average German Sheppard is larger (no exaggeration!). Your perspective
as a western hunter doesn't account for this difference in size (unless you
hunt blacktails). Your average mule deer is probably 3-4 times as big as the
average deep south whitetail. Get your one buck and doe in Oregon and you'll
have more venison in the freezer than if you filled all your tags in
Mississippi! So don't do anything rash!
