Question:
I'm looking for bows that are passable for SCA use that won't take a
sizable chunk out of my wallet. can anybody tell me where i can get a
bow for a good price online, mail-order, or somewhere in orange or san
bernardino county here in S. California?
Answer:
agree yard sales, auctions, and flea markets are a good source of
inexpensive bows, IF you know what you are looking for, and how to spot
dangerous flaws. If you want to buy new Martin makes a relatively
inexpensive line of beginner bows, the X-100 and X-200 recurves are usually priced under $150 and come in draw weights suitable for beginners.
Here are the web sites of some traditional archery supply houses. Three
Rivers Archery: www.3riversarchery.com (I have dealt with this place,
they are very good about service, and usually have what you need in
stock) McMahon Archery: www.mcmahonarchery.com (I haven't ordered from
them, so I don't know how their service is). Kustom King Traditional
Archery: www.kustom-king.com (again I don't know their service history)
Some addresses for traditional archery supply houses:
J&M Traditions (very SCA friendly) RD 2 box 413, Sunbury PA 17801, phone #
717 286-7887
Targets Unlimited: PO box 196 Dept TBH Fayetteville PA 17222, phone #
717 352-9152
For more info and more choices i reccomend finding a copoy of Traditional
Bowhunter magazine or Primitive Archer magazine. These magazines have
lots of ads from traditional shops all over the country. They often have
articles of interest to SCA archers as well.
