Question:
I understand there are trout in the Guadalupe River. When does the
fishing start?
Answer:
While the Guadalupe and Brazos are stocked tailwaters, there are over 70
lakes, ponds, and small rivers stocked with trout for winter fishing in
Texas. Check out the stocking areas at http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us. Also,
within a days drive of Dallas you'll find several spots in Oklahoma, most
notably the Mountain Fork (Broken Bow) perhaps the best tailwater south of
the White River. Also, the Little Missouri River in southwest Arkansas is
my favorite trout stream. But living in Dallas means being closer to New
Mexico and Colorado than Tennessee (including the San Juan).
I'm talking trout, when I should be enticing you with great stories of big
bass (Lake Fork and Eagle Lake), smallmouth (Canyon Lake), white bass and
stripers (Texoma), coastal fishing for reds, specks, kings, cobia, dolphin,
and Lord knows! You live in a great flyfishing state. Take time to enjoy
it. If you need help, go to either the Dallas or Ft. Worth fly club
meetings, or get one of the videos at Academy Sports on flyfishing in Texas.
