Texas Deer Hunting

Question:
How do you go about finding a good deer lease. Are they advertised? Will landowners let you walk a property in a pre lease negotiation? Do you have to know local folk? Can a lease be exclusive or is it normally shared with others? Any suggestions on where I can get more info about this. It looks like I'm going to be in texas come december. That means that this hunting season will be up here but next will be down there. I'm a very serious deer hunter and I don't like to leave things to chance.

Answer:
I have freqently seen information about deer leases in the classified section of both newspapers in San Antonio, I assume that the Dallas Times Herald would have the same things. You can probably pick the Sunday edition up at a major book store or sometimes the airport. You also might look for a good sized town in a rural county, like McKinney, and see if you can get a subscription to their local (usually weekly) paper. Little newspapers will frequently run a story if a local boy brings in a really good buck. I wouldn't lease a place if the owner wouldn't let me walk it first. Be careful to ask the owner the questions you ask in your post. Sharing and such. Also if the land is leased for doves, quail or other seasons. May be there is too much shooting in the area.
