Question:
We are thinking of retiring to Texas (Hill Country area) and my husband
needs info on hunting (deer/turkey). Is there any open land or do you
have to hunt out of a club or hunting ranch?
Answer:
To hunt on private land in Texas you lease the hunting rights for the
season or year. There is very little public land available for hunting
(and too many hunters there). Typically this is based on the number of
hunters. It can run around $1000+ per hunter. A lease many have 10-15
hunters (generally a group will get together to lease a ranch). Variables
include what game you can shoot, availablity in non-hunting season,
camping or lodge facitilies, fishing, etc. There is also some Texas Parks
land available for hunting that you must apply for.
Typically, you shoot from blinds. And using bait is legal. Feral hogs and
javalina (not a member of the pig family), turkeys, quail and dove are
some of the game animals available. Water fowl are available in East
Texas and again you get a lease for this. There are also day leases
available.
Try posting to TX.GUNS. And, for Texas hunting information, search for
the Texas Parks and Wildlife Web page. Sorry I don't have it's address.
