Question:
Can someone give me pointers on where to start? I've looked at public hunting but worry about not "knowing" which guns are on a property. I don't expect folks to give me stuff for free... and I'm willing to pay my share or work some land in exchange for a deal... and I'm not expecting a "rambo-like" hunt. Any hunters out there looking for another person to contribute to their hunting party?

Answer:
Your need to hunt is understandable... the high cost of a hunting lease is (generally) due to the "unlimited expense account" attitude of various corporations that use hunting lease camaraderie to entertain politicians and other "necessary" big-wigs for the benefit of corporate earnings enhancement. Common practice in SOTX to "go in" and out bid a group of friends that have been on a lease for years... then turn it into a "canned" hunt situation where they can take the "johns" out for a hunt with much fanfare, good results, much whiskey and other good times... So, the only remedy for those who want to hunt, but lack the funds to compete with said unlimited expense accounts is to go to SOTX (certain counties are better than others) and cruise the back roads in the evening and early morning.... frequently there are game animals in the ROW that can be shot, loaded and taken away in moments.... This practice has been ritual for the natives for eons. I have watched them stop, run to a fence, shoot into a pasture, climb the fence and go in ....coming out with an animal of some description (not always legal... but who cares). One young pair offered us a "ham" as they departed, loading the little buck into a pickup truck (a very new and expensive model). They were natives to the county (or adjacent) county... In SOTX it is considered the "right" of the 'ole time' natives to hunt this way... you might as well come on down and get in on the action... Of course there is the small chance you will be apprehended and fined... but the odds are slim and the price of the lease is, after all, modest!
