Question:
Recently returned from a public land mule deer hunt in southeastern new
mexico around mayhill, NM. Hunt was nonproductive, but had a great time.
Would like to hear from other hunters who have hunted in same area.
Maybe you can give me some tips.
Answer:
I'm from Austin Texas and have hunted mule deer in New Mexico 4 times.
Once southwest in the Gila, didn't see any, (except on the road) saw lots of
elk and got one. South central, Cibola national forest, saw 2 really nice
bucks together but couldn't get up on them. North central near Antonito
colorado, in unit 52, didn't see any but got an elk, and a park hunt on the
colorado border. This was a late season archer hunt in a 5k acre park. I saw
a few, one nice buck and someone took a small buck on that hunt. Snow was deep
and had a good time. Just joined a deer lease in west texas that supposedly
has a few muley's on in, season lasts 2 weeks, starting tomorrow, we'll see.
I'd like to keep in touch because I'd like to someday unlock the secret of mule
deer hunting and I do a bit of research.
