Question:
I recently got drawn for that rare Nevada Tag. I drew the Zones in
the Northeast corner of the State. Zones (71-78) I'm looking for any
suggestions where I might find that 30" plus record mule deer
Answer:
Tags in your zone is not rare. I put in for that zone when I really want a
tag. You will be accompanied by a swarm of other hunters. For the big
boys, go as far away from roads and hike as high as you can. Most of the
30" plus bucks are going to be moving towards high country as the first
shots are fired on opening day. I'd suggest you be there to fire that first
shot he hears. The mountian range just north of Wells (forget the name)
holds most of those deer. Unfortunately, everyone knows this. The areas
close to Wells will be especially crowded. Go north of that area, towards
the northern most tip of the mountian range. Make sure, if your on private
land, get permission. There are some large commercial ranches in that area
and they like to keep their deer for visitors. Hunt BLM land...there's lots
of it. I think you got a bous area just south of Gabbs. There used to be a
nice herd of elk there...incase you like to see elk when your hunting.
There are nice size bucks there towards the end of the season. Any
survivors have moved down there to prepare for the rut. Does the season
extend into the first week of November? If so, your in for a treat...the
deer will almost be herded up there like you see whitetails do in the
midwest. But...beware...they are weary! You need to be able to shoot out
to 400 yards to get a chance at one...but it's neat to see them there and if
your still hunting by that part of the season, this will be your best bet.
Now...I'm not telling you where the real big boys are. I have a coupple
secrets and there are some nice non-typical up in that area that Boone and
Crocket would salavate over. They are not on the range I mentioned, so if
someone else gives you advice on a different spot, if I were you, I'd be
checkin it out. Do not go near Mountian City Highway...it's a total waste
of time. There will be so many hunters chasing button bucks you'd be
embarrased to call yourself a hunter. They all wear blaze orange. You'll
see them.
