Question:
How many people out there have access to a range 50 or more yards long and
are not done shooting for the season? If you do and are, could you record
some scores and send them to me? So far, I only have my own scores recorded
Answer:
My range goes out to 100 yards. We shot 60 and 80 for the first time last
weekend. At 60, we could hit the 122cm target, even people with light bows.
At 80, we mostly missed. At 100, I suspect we'd rarely hit. (My current
RR average is about 80, my high IKAC this year was 211, I use a 41#
tournament-quality recurve shooting at over 160fps).
Based on this, and considering the skill of archers in my area, I'm going
to be introducing a 40/50/60 yard shoot next year, like a slightly shorter
American Round. Maybe by next fall we'll all be shooting at 80 and 100 yards,
but right now (and next spring) it would be pure frustration.
But if you're introducing a long-range IKAC, I suggest you make it 60/80/100,
like a shorter York Round. (Alternatively, 40/60/80 with 122cm targets would
be an elegant doubling of the current IKAC). The SCA needs something to work
up to, and the good archers in places like the East and Middle need a challenge
