Question:
I'm a novice bowyer interested in obtaining detailed, accurate
dimensions or schematics for prehistoric/ancient bows, particularly
from northeastern U.S. finds. The plan is to replicate some of these
artifacts when I have gained some skill in bow-making
Answer:
I have an older bow, 150 + years, from the eastern US. The bow is 61 1/2"
in length, the tips are notched about 3/4", and the circumference of the
center of the bow is appox. 3 1/2". I never attempted to determine the type
of wood the bow is made of. It was craved from a larger piece of wood and
shows the notch marks. It tapers from both ends to the larger center,
really a nice piece of work.
