Question:
Someone had previously asked if centerfire rifles were allowed to be used for
deer hunting. In Illinois the answer is no. Only slugs are allowed to be
used. I'm not sure what the rationale is behind this policy, perhaps someone
can help out on this topic.
Answer:
I've always figured that it was because a shot from a rifle would carry much
farther than a slug. Since Illinois is quite flat and heavily treed, it would
be easy to hit a house or something worse (person, livestock) if you missed
the deer.
Out west, there are more hills and less trees so you can pretty much see for
the entire bullet path. But of course, this is a generalization.
