Question:
I will be hunting elk and mule deer in Idaho this fall with an emphasis on elk.
For this hunt I purchased a Winchester Mod 70 SM with a BOSS in .300 Win. mag.
I am looking for an over-the-counter load that will serve adequately for both
purposes. I have experience hunting whitetail with a .270; however, I do not
have any personal experience with the .300 Win. mag. I would appreciate some
feedback/opinions on an adequate over-the-counter elk/mule deer load in .300
Win. mag.
Answer:
Obviously you need to figure out what shoots accurately in your rifle, but
I would definitely try Federal Premium 200 grain Trophy Bonded. In my
Mod. 70 without a BOSS this load consistently groups three shots in an
inch from a rest at 100 yards and no other factory load comes close to
that in my rifle.
