Question:
I went to Cub Scout Day Camp with my now Wolf son this past June. They had
both BB gun shooting and archery. The sad fact was that the boys only got to
shoot off 10 BBs and 5 arrows. To top it off my son had never held a rifle
or bow in his life, and the leaders didn't take much (any?) time to show him
how to hold them properly. They focused mostly on safety (which is
important).
Answer:
I've been a shooting instructor for about a hundred years or so it
seems. I was very disappointed in the BB Gun program at day camp.
The boys received NO instruction in shooting and the safety
instruction was done by a Boy Scout with a serious case of the
mumbles. All they were told was "shoot when I say commence firing."
The kids didn't know how to hold the rifle, aim or anything.
At residence camp, it was a bit better but on "open program day," all
the boys who went to shoot shot at the same target because "it was too
expensive to use fresh targets" So, no on knew where their shots were
landing. Universally, it was declared to be lame by the boys.
The rifle shooting at Boy Scout camp was a excellent program. The
instructor was a retired cop and a state champion shooter with a
wonderful sense of humour.
