Question:
I've been quite stupid- you optimists would say "ambitious" - in
picking out sewing projects. One of my first projects was a swimming suit,
for instance, and elastic doesn't seem to be a fabric for beginners.
Let's just say the end project was unusual, shall we? But now I'd like to
try to build myself a pair of waders.
Answer:
I would have thought a salopet or dungarees pattern would be more help
than gaiters, as gaiters only cover the bit between the top of your
boots and your knee.
With the right type of fabric and seam sealant, it should be possible to
make a pair of salopets that you can sew or glue to the top of a pair of
cheap wellies to make waders. If sewing to the top of the wellies, you
will need to do this either by hand or using a machine that can cope
with shoe leather. You then tape over the seam on both sides, using a
bit of the fabric and some seam sealant. Sealant should be available
from providers of outdoor equipment fabrics and notions or fishing
shops.
