Question:
I am an experienced angler who is getting into fly fishing for the first
time. Can anyone suggest what equipment I should purchace to get
started?
Answer:
I usually fish smallmouth with a 5 weight 10 foot rod, from a float tube. Weight
forward floating lines and top water flys. Muddlers, Frog Poppers and my favorite,
wolly buggers (colors black and olive with crystal flash).
In areas where the fish are two pound or bigger a 7 or 8 weight rod would work
better.
Visit your local fly shop for a recommended rod. It does'nt have to be expensive
but you usually get what you pay for. You should'nt need a large expensive reel
but it does depend on the water you're fishing (lakes or rivers or both)
