Question:
I'm looking for anyone who can suggest a good spot in the Dayton OH area to
find a good number of deer. This is where I'm spending my bow season and the
second week of gun season. I've already missed a doe (2 tags, 1 is doe only)
on openning day at Spring Valley. These two have since left the area. Private
property would be great or a little known public area. Any luck in OH?
Answer:
There are several public places that contain a good number of deer...
Ceasar Creek & Sycamore are good starters. I spoke with one of the local
wildlife managers last week who said the Ceasar Creek deer population
was higher than he's ever seen it.
My next suggestion would be Paint Creek Wildlife area. The pressure does
not seem as intense. Look into Mead land holdings (public hunting) near
Chillicothe(sp).
All of These areas do get some pressure, but it tends to be the
lazy type.
Get in deep, eary, and use entering hunters drive the deer to you.
Sometimes they don't show up, but thats ok too.
Pick up maps at the local park office... You will be amazed at how
much hunting land there is. Look for an OHIO public hunting pamphlet
also, it contains all the hunting land, and numbers to the different
park offices.
We are all looking for private land to hunt, but owners just don't
seem to be cooperative. Give them a few more years of herds building
on their land and they will change their minds.
