Question:
When hiring a Deer hunting Guide. What is to be expected from them.
What kind of services and whatever else can you expect from them.
Answer:
You leave a lot of questions yourself! Where are you hunting? What do
they offer? What is their price? Do they make any guarantees?
I worked as a licensed hunting guide for 30 years in the Rockies. The
outfitters I worked for all had professional brochures printed that
told the client what the outfit was all about, what the hunting was
like, what the camp was like, what to expect, what it would cost. Just
as importantly, they gave a list of clients for references.
As guides, we were expected to not only know the game we hunted,
habits, feed areas, routes, current conditions and where the game was,
but we also had to know how to take care of the clients. That meant
making sure at zero dark thirty they had hot coffee in a thermos they
could reach before they ever got out of their sleeping bag and the
stove in their tent was already putting out heat while we were getting
the saddle stock ready and the cook was busy in the cook tent. That
was just the start of the day!!
WE all had to have first aid cards that included current CPR quals to
even get our guide license. If an animal was put down, we took care of
everything and the hunter only had to smile for the camera and develop
a braggin story.
The only guarantees we ever gave anyone was to have a full belly and a
tired ass from hard hunting. Most of our success rates were at 75% or
better but if we put a hunter on an animal and he/she blew the shot, I
felt that I had done what I was hired to do. Certainly it depends on
the individual as to how much farther you'll go to make the hunt a
really knock out memory complete with trophy/s.
