Question:
I've just got a Beagle that seems to have a lot of hunting instincts.
His baying sure sounds like a hunting hound but I know next to nothing
about the appropriate breeds used for hunting. Does someone know about
Beagles and hunting?
Answer:
Beagles are good hunting dogs. Here in Norway they are used on hares
and deer.
Norwegian law allowes deer to be hunted by dogs as long as the dog is
less than 41 cm at shoulder heigth. (The reason beeing that a smaller
hound will not have the speed or ability to actually catch the deer
and kill or maim it.) The most popular breeds here are the dachshound,
the beagle and the sweedish drever. (A kind of beagle with even
shorter legs. Much like a dachshounds legs.)
Another advantage is that when the hound is slow it really dosn't seem
to bother the deer that much. They will just walk away and do some
rounds in the terrain rather than taking the faster way out of the
county.
