Question:
I'm thinking about heading to Texas next deer season
to hunt for whitetails. I haven't hunted deer (ever)!
I hear that there is very little public land on which
to hunt and therefore hunting leases are the usual
way hunters access private property. Can anyone
provide info on
The deer hunters almanac I recently picked up had
the bag limit for Texas at 1 deer per season. Is
that a misprint? I think PA had a 6-deer season limit.
Answer:
This is not true for in-state hunters. It may or not be for
out-of-state. I would call the number here in Austin. They can
answer all your questions and I understand they can even help you find
a lease.
I'm from South Texas & can assure you that it is quite expensive to hunt
whitetails, that is if you can locate a ranch to hunt. I began hunting
23 years ago when I married my husband & have watched it become so
commercial that it's just about forced us to look at other game such as
elk, antelope, mule deer, etc.
There is no public land in south Texas that I'm aware of & I've lived
here all my life. We used to live just 1 mile from King Ranch fence &
once in a while, pretty often, deer and other game came over the fence
into the fields. Those were the days!
