Question:
I need a change of pace so I am looking to
change things up next year and go to Canada instead. Any suggestions on
lakes, lodging, guides, etc.? Is it all fly fishing or do some folks use
baitcasters up there?
Answer:
Well,Saskatchewan is allright but you forgot to mention that it doesn't even
come close to Manitoba for fisheries.Sure you mentioned some "decent"
places, but here we have tons of places as good or better and a lot of them
are within a 2 hours drive from Winnipeg. No need for expensive fly-in.But,at
this time of the year,as good as Manitoba is,the best all-around destination
is still Lake Of The Woods. My last trip,I spent 2 days there with a
friend. We mostly speed-troll and a bit of casting and boated 6 muskies
between the two of us.The smallest(mine) was 40",the biggest(his) 49".We
were fishing for muskies around the traditional spots(Monument Bay Lodge
area, the Channels, etc) and we also caught our share of pikes, probably 12-15
over 2 days(again, that's not what we're after). They were all over 36" and we
got a 42" and a 45".This was last year,3rd week of October.
