Question:
Is there anyone out thre who is interested in primitive archery?
Answer:
The mulberry does not have a think sapwood and yes, you should remove it.
I have worked with both white and black ash. The better of the two is
white ash. Ash has a very thick sapwood and it can be used to make a good
bow. It takes a large tree to get much heartwood because the sapwood is
so thick. Do not discard the heartwood of larger trees. I have used the
heartwood for sinew backed bows and it is not hard and difficult to work.
I think it is much like the sap wood in terms of workability. It also
makes good bows and is a much more attractive than the sapwood. This has
been my experience. I would be interested in hearing the experience of
others in using the heartwood of white ash.
